Starting point for all the hikes is Ocotal, a city at 3.5 hours by bus from the capital Managua and 1 hour from Estelí, that other northern big city. All the hikes can be walked in 1 day, but it might be much more interesting to spend 2 days on hike number 1 and 5 and staying in the communities.

But the best to do is to download the book and to discover Northern Nicaragua on foot in an adventurous and independent way and eager to learn about the real rural life.
