This project and website were the initiative of a Nicaraguan based organisation, UNAG, Unión Nacional de Agricultores y Ganadores and the belgian ngo Volens.
UNAG is a farmer’s union and defends the interests of small famers. One of the projects is to promote creative ways to guarantee an extra income and one of them is the promotion of rural tourism.
UNAG was a partner of Volens in the 2008-2010 program. Volens is a Belgian NGO founded in 1964, for international solidarity and development aid, embedded in Belgian society. Volens has an extended network of solidarity groups and partner organizations in more than 25 countries in Africa, Latin-America and Asia. Together, they aim to include groups that are in the margins of society.
The hiking map “Discover the rustic beauty of Nueva Segovia” has two objectives:
Promotion of an unexplored mountainous region: With these hiking maps we want to give tourists the possibility to hike the astonishing area of Nueva Segovia in a cheap and adventurous way. In total we offer 7 hikes: 4 hikes in the municipalities Dipilto and Macuelizo, 1 hike in the municipality Ciudad Antigua, and 2 hikes in the municipality Mozonte.
Promotion of rural tourism: Through the development of rural tourism we seek to support the local population financially (rural tourism as alternative income). Beside the hike instructions, detailed information about the services local people can offer, is included (such as possibilities for ‘bed and breakfast’, guided tours to tourist attractions, serving food etc.).
INTUR, the national tourism department is also involved in the project and can provide more information as well.
